I Am

How should we understand God’s declaration to Moses, “I am that I am?” [Exodus 3:14]

We know that creatures evolve through relation. Mostly they eat each other, but birds also nest in trees. Certainly, nesting birds cannot survive without a tree, and if birds drop the seeds that grow into trees, the converse is also true.

When did this mutuality start? Without it, reality would be shifting chaos. For anything to endure, something must sustain it.

Love is that shield. Love wills nothing of its object except to be. This is God, the “I am” that chanced to moderate chaos. “That” exists through and in “I am,” and conversely “I am” permeates and has meaning in “that.” They are inseparable, bound by their mutual gratitude.

God is that which God makes possible.
