Why do we have four gospels?
Well, who would have been able to write an authoritative account of Jesus’ ministry? Only Jesus, of course. So, if Scripture is authoritative, why didn’t Jesus write a gospel?
We must assume that he had his reasons. Perhaps: “Written records are parsed, redacted, and twisted to justify the practices of priests and kings.”
All that we know is that this reticence was shared by the Apostles. The Gospels were often set down posthumously, most likely by those who had received the history orally.
Jesus didn’t leave a Gospel, but something far better: the Holy Spirit. Each gospel, then, should be read only as the author’s record of surrender to its governance.
