The Folly of Kings

How profound is God’s forbearance?

Of Samuel, the leading men of Israel demanded a king, claiming “A king will fight our battles for us.”

The Goliath arrives, and Saul promises his title to any man that will go out and defeat the enemy.

Finally, David arrives out of nowhere – just as did the preceding Judges. This is God’s way of saying, “Remember how this works? I always save you.”

Poor David, glorified and made king. His Psalms testify to the loneliness, paranoia and megalomania that engulfs those set apart for rule.

Still in this day, David is glorified. Do you not understand? “Love God and love your neighbor.” Why did David not plea that wisdom be given to those that persecuted him?
