Why does Jesus caution, “What do you benefit if you gain the world but lose your soul?” [Matt. 16:26]

Incarnation – the joining of a soul to a body – begins organically in the womb. The proliferating cells slowly embrace and absorb the infant’s soul.

The point of incarnation, though, is to project will into the world. We learn to manipulate objects and then to relate to people. At every step along the way, our soul merges into the world around us.

Realize, however, that material things are dense. They entrap spirit. The more we gain, the more our soul is entangled. When we die, we cannot liberate all the pieces.

Revealing the terrifying error of “He who dies with the most toys wins.”
