When Jesus cited the Jewish book of prayer, “Love God…and your neighbor,” he was excluding selfishness. When the biologist Richard Dawkins wrote a book titled “The Selfish Gene,” he was testifying that Darwinian evolution is the opposite of Christianity.

In satisfying the goals of selfishness, living creatures are chained to two primary drives: survival and sex. In their most corrupt form, these become aggression and lust.

The structure of the New Jerusalem assures us that love will redeem those drives. The walls, housing the masculine elders, protect the Tree of Life, whose feminine leaves affirm virtue and heal dissension. Protection and procreativity, united in celebration of love.

Jesus conquered Death on the cross, taming aggression. What woman will come forward to join him in conquering lust?
