Why were Adam and Eve evicted from Eden?

Common theology holds that they surrendered the virtue upon partaking of the “fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” God could no longer tolerate their presence.

In the mournful, “Adam? Where are you?” I hear not judgment, but parental heartbreak.

An ill child kept home from a party may plead, “Why are you punishing me?” So we should understand God’s “punishments” of Adam and Eve. They had become infected with selfishness. Could God allow them to partake of His power? Consider the fate of the buffalo, draft animals, or old-growth forests. No, we were no longer trusted, and surrendered pain-free birth, fertile land, and stewardship.
